On Tuesday I launched my very first post that explained the backstory about opening my business and the natural progression to my new direction to help newbie cakers start the cake business of their dreams. It touched on the importance of chasing your dreams and you can read that here. Today, we’re going to get started with our first topic of discussion which is 8 reasons why you need to start your dream cake business!
1. Because You Love It
Chances are you spend a ton of time already thinking about maybe one day having a cake business. You probably look at pictures online and watch cake shows on tv. Maybe you bake cakes for fun and give your creations away to friends and family. When people rave about them, it no doubt makes you feel really awesome. You might even have an amazing word of mouth setup going so when someone needs a cake they come to you! You may have even spent some time looking into what it would take to start a cake business but found yourself overwhelmed or confused. You could also be running some sort of a makeshift business because you’re not 100% sure how to set everything up correctly.
I believe when you love something enough that you should do it! Our lives are so short, why do we make ourselves suffer through doing things we don’t love? People always have excuses, but if you end up wasting your life away at a job you hate then will those excuses matter later on? If you have a job that tears you down day after day, that is not what you want to actually do and just sucks the life out of you, then you need to do something about that.
2. You Will Lose Your Fear of the Unknown
There are always 101 reasons why you can’t do a thing. The fear of the unknown, the fear of falling out of line with what people expect of us, fear that you won’t know how and even the fear of failure. That fear can overwhelm us and make it impossible to take steps forward.
A palliative care nurse took notes of the regrets of her dying patients. Do you know what their biggest and most common regret was? Not having the courage to chase their dreams. I learned this first hand because it was my mother’s regret in the moments before her death. It shook me to the core because she had ALWAYS urged me to chase my own dreams. How could she have not chased hers?
The unknown that surrounds us can be a really scary thing. Letting go of the safety nets we create for ourselves is the hardest step. However, you will very quickly learn that there are a ton of different ways to deal with all of those changes. Once you make the leap to start your cake business, everything will come together really fast because it HAS to and you will realize that there really wasn’t anything to be afraid of, to begin with.
3. You Will Become More Grateful
If you are leaving a job that pays well to start the cake business of your dreams, you will most likely have to start living on a budget. My family cut some things that I always thought were necessities. A few ways we cut expenses was trading disposable diapers for cloth ones, we chose not to formula feed because formula costs an arm and a leg, we made our own cleaning solutions and laundry soap, I got rid of my cell phone, and we stopped eating out.
When my business began to earn more, those things slowly came back. I was ecstatic to have a cell phone again. Every time I load up my washer with store bought laundry detergent I think about the tough times when I used homemade laundry soap. Things like that will make you really appreciate when business begins to provide all the things you need. You’ll appreciate what you have more and where you were when you started. You’ll appreciate every dollar you earn to fullest and will feel a sense of pride when you purchase things with your hard earned money.
4. You Will Become Super-crazy Organized (In a Good Way)
When I first started my cake business I had NO idea how to run a business. I would write my orders in a book and have goodwill faith that they’d pay when they came to collect. I would glance at the supplies I had before heading out to shop and had no system in place to track the amounts of ingredients I needed. I’d forget things or buy way too much. I would take on last minute orders and not charge properly. I’d have to stay up all night and run out to the store at 4 am to grab butter or some other ingredient I forgot.
I was exhausted and getting fed up so I was forced to change. I needed to come up with ideas that would make things go smoother. So I started makings lists, created an intake process, made order forms/contracts, set a calendar in place, learned to take and track inventory, I got Cake Boss software that allowed me to track orders, set up recipes, analyze costs, set up shopping lists, and enabled me to figure out a per slice cost that ensures I make a livable hourly wage. I stopped allowing myself to take on last minute orders. I started taking deposits and set up payment schedules.
All of this organization has made the process of running my business much easier and enjoyable! It has improved all the areas of my life and makes me feel a lot more stress-free. It’s really great!
5. You Will Learn More Than Ever Before and Your Skills Will Increase Faster
The first thing you will realize when you start your cake business is that there is SO much you don’t know. It will seem sort of daunting at first but once you learn these things, you will feel empowered! I made a list of the thing I needed to know and just worked to cross each item off my list one by one.
Once you realize how much you are capable of learning, it will push you to learn even more. I find that I read more often from a variety of sources… business publications, technical journals, cake blogs, and tutorials. I follow Facebook groups that focus on business or cakes. I pay attention to posts with questions I also don’t know the answer to. I listen to what people are saying in the comments and go explore the concept some more on my own. I constantly google things I don’t know the answer to.
I used to be the type of person who didn’t know where to find the answers to my questions and that sometimes left me feeling a little defeated. Slowly, this began to apply itself to all areas of my life. Instead of sitting around feeling defeated and frustrated because I don’t know how to do a thing I will grab my computer, head to the library, and even reach out to my peers in order to learn.
6. You Will Meet the Most Amazing People
When you first start your own business and you’re working on your own from home, it can feel really lonely. However, you will eventually realize you NEED to reach out. You have to grow your presence in your community so that you can grow your business and the BEST way to do that is to network. Once you get out into your community you will meet the most amazing people! You’ll meet clients and other business owners, movers, and shakers of your community. All these people will add value to your life.
The BEST part is that you will meet others who run cake businesses. A lot of people are mistaken in the fact that anyone else in your industry is your competition, and anyone who is competition is your enemy. That couldn’t be further from the truth! I’m friends with a few of the cakers in my area and it’s nice to know that if you can’t take on a cake for a client for some reason, I know a person I can send them to. You’ll also learn from each other. You can even reach out and meet cake business owners throughout the world by finding groups on facebook and attending cake themed events! The opportunities are limitless.
7. You Will Learn to Banish Your Regrets
This goes hand in hand with losing your fear of the unknown. When you do the things you want to do because you’ve learned to fearlessly chase your dreams you will no longer wonder “what if”. You will learn to have no regrets because there is nothing you haven’t tried or done just because you are afraid. It will extend to every aspect of your life as well.
Want to buy a house? Make it happen. Always wanted to travel to another country? Do it. Want to go back to school. Ok! Started a cake business and learned it wasn’t for you? That’s ok, too! At least now you know for sure!
I had “decided” that pharmacy was for me and had a secure job at a local one where I earned a lot of money. I was about to start school for it and everything. But, after working that job for some time, I realized it wasn’t for me. I’d tried it and I wasn’t cut out for it. I had no regrets when I walked away and I still don’t. I jumped into the unknown and I found what I was meant to do.
8. You will learn how to achieve your goals
This is the SUPER BIG one! Once you get your cake business started, learn the things you need to learn and get it growing you will realize that you are not only chasing your dream but you’re achieving it! Once you realize you can accomplish this huge task of starting your own cake business all of your other goals will be a piece of cake!
