This is our FAQ page with some answers to the more frequently asked questions by clients. Let us know if you have any questions not addressed here.
Where are you located?
We are located in Owosso, Michigan. At this time we do not have a storefront. We produce all of our products and do some tastings/consults in our home under the guidelines of the Michigan Cottage Food Laws. We’ve taken a non-required class provided by the Small Business Association of Michigan through Shiawassee Chamber of Commerce and Shiawassee County Health Department in order to be better acquainted with all of the guidelines set forth by the State of Michigan and our local health department.
Why do your cakes cost more than Walmart or another grocery store’s bakery cakes?
The cost of our cakes reflect the value, time, effort, skill and quality ingredients we put into each and every one.
What is so special about your cakes?
Your order is completely 100% custom. We design up an idea based on what your theme or idea is and we can design you a cake no one has ever had before. You have 100’s of possible flavor combinations so you can choose your favorite. We bake your cake completely from scratch just a few days before your event with wholesome ingredients. We cover and decorate it with buttercream made from real butter. Our fondant is made from scratch out of marshmallows (never boxed kinds that taste like plastic). All of our sugar decorations are made by hand and are almost always 100% edible (some flowers contain wires for stability, and shouldn’t be eaten).
An average cake order takes about 15 hours total to complete, from shopping to baking to decorating. More complicated cakes, like a wedding cake, can take 40 or more hours to complete. Sugar decorations like flowers must be started weeks ahead of time so that they have time to dry (these keep almost indefinitely, though, so no worry of spoiling).
Your cake is not ever made in a factory by machines or frozen for up to a year. There is no Crisco in the buttercream. Your cake is made with love and care.
So, if it’s so hard and time-consuming, why do you do this?
Because I LOVE to! Just for you!
It was personally my dream to make beautiful things, specifically art when I was a child. When I grew up, I realized it was nearly impossible to make art and make a living that supports my family. Until I began to make cakes… not only do I get to make beautiful cakes, but I ensure they taste amazing, too. It’s personally awesome for me to see the joy everything I make brings to my customers. This is my DREAM.
Do you make completely custom cakes?
Yes. All of our cakes are custom made to order according to the customer’s desires. All of them are baked just days before your event in the flavors you choose and decorated exactly how you want. There is no book full of designs that you must pick from.
What does a custom cake cost?
We have some cakes that are a standard price. You can check out our Party Cakes page to see what sizes work for your event and budget. We’re happy to consult either by phone or email to help determine the cost of the cake you are after, and willing to help figure out something that will meet your expectations and stay within budget. What is Gluten?
Gluten is a naturally occurring substance in wheat flour and some other types of grains. Many people have a sensitivity to this that causes them to get VERY sick when they eat it. It is ONLY naturally occurring in certain types of grains.
Why do some things that wouldn’t have any type of wheat or grain in them need to be Gluten Free?
Many items (although they are naturally gluten free because they contain no flour) are sometimes processed and packaged in a plant that also processes things that do contain gluten. Cross contamination happens, and products like chocolate chips get covered in gluten.
Are you Gluten Free Certified?
No, we are not. We have taken great care in hunting down all of the products and brands that are certified Gluten Free… either guaranteed on the package or finding out specifically with phone calls to the companies. We then make sure that every Gluten Free product we make is done well after we’ve worked with any sort of gluten containing product and after everything has been stripped, cleaned, washed twice and sanitized. \
While we can’t guarantee a dedicated facility, we can promise we’ve worked hard to get it as clean as we can.
Can I get the same look as that fondant cake with buttercream?
Possibly, but most likely not. I would have to look at the design you are interested in, but some sorts of decorations that have been done in fondant are just not possible in buttercream.
Why does fondant cost more than buttercream?
A lot of effort and care is put into making a fondant cake. We make our fondant from scratch using marshmallows. Each batch covers approximately one cake and takes about 30 minutes to make. It then gets kneaded, rolled and carefully applied to the outside of the cake, with much care taken to make sure it comes out completely smooth.
What if I like or want the look of a fondant cake, but hate the taste of fondant?
Please, try mine. I promise… the fondant you’ve probably had before came from a box and includes a laundry list of ingredients and chemicals and tastes terrible! I make mine from scratch using marshmallows and sugar and it comes out absolutely delightful. Most people love it to bits.
If worse comes to worse and you try it and still hate it you can also pull it off. Underneath all of my fondant cakes is a layer of buttercream. Layer cakes are also filled with buttercream, so you won’t miss out.
What if I don’t want to pay extra for fondant?
We may be able to execute your design in buttercream, but it will not be exact. It may not even be close. It will really depend on the design you are hoping for and how complex it is. We’ll need to see a photo to be sure and you can always feel free to send a photo to our email: NomNomSweeties@gmail.com to get a quote. We can also talk more about this when we speak either in person at a consult or on the phone.
